We arrived by bullet train into Shanghai from Wuhan our drop off destination from the Yangtze Cruise with horrible head colds (lovely image). We walked into the biggest train station i have ever seen, it was colossal.

Shanghai is know as Paris of the East, it has wide tree lined streets and even a district nicknamed the French Concession. We stayed in the Four Seasons! No only kidding, we stayed in a hostel downtown next to the People's Square which is in fact more of a park than a big open square. The hostel had a roof top bar over looking the city. I managed of course to locate a nice Irish bar where we were able to watch the Irish match!!!

We visited The Bund which is a long pier along the water front over-looking the Pudong Finical District. The are some amazing sky-scrapers  in Shanghai and one of the more interesting ways to travel across the river is to travel through the Shanghai Sight Seeing Tunnel.  I don't quite know what we expected but what we were treated to was absolute madness. The tunnel is lit up with plenty of crazy lights and there is an eery version of Enya being played in the background, we travelled inside a pod like something you see from Star Wars. Throughout the trip in the tunnel  there are lights flashing and a voice randomly saying words about the creation of the world. The whole thing was just nuts- very similar to the tunnel trip in Willy Wonka minus the boat, I can't comprehend how someone would spend any money to build it!!!

During our action packed stay in Shanghai we managed to fit in the Aquarium, a day in the French Concession, a stroll around the cities shopping districts with wee purchases here and there.  We have now organised near enough the rest of our travel in China which is weird as tomorrow two weeks we leave China for South East Asia and our tour of Cambodia.  Five weeks later we arrive in Australia. Time is flying ~ Scary

One interesting moment for us was right after we got off the subway one afternoon. We were walking down the road and a few minutes later we heard loads of sirens approaching and what must have been a dozen fire brigades whizzzed past us. We pondered what may have happened but kept walking only to find out later that day that the subway we had just been on had been in a horrific collision. Unfortunately the news in China tends to be quite censored so it was hard to get any information but we believe we had a very lucky escape!

So now we are about to land in Guilin where we can trek the rice terraces and see some of the best scenery in all of China. So hopefully the Boys in Green destroy Italy at the weekend and we will meet Wales in the Quarter Finals.

Hope all is well at home, chat soon

Roy
